ENG 101: English for Academic Purposes

ENG 101 – Academic English is the prerequisite of ENG 102 – Expository Writing, and students are required to attend the course on a regular basis. Students are expected to participate in class discussions. ENG 101 is a course in which students will make group discussions and write well-structured essays.

Course ObjectiveThis is a common-core course designed to help students develop their academic English skills. In addition to refining their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, students will be introduced to new academic strategies that will help them in their departmental studies. Students will learn how to summarize, paraphrase and cite sources.

  1. To identify the main idea and supporting structures in an academic text and analyze them from a critical perspective
  2. To identify examples and evidence in academic texts and discuss how they support the main arguments
  3. To distinguish between main and supporting ideas in lectures or presentations and analyze their structure
  4. To summarize information from academic texts and rephrase it using appropriate academic language
  5. To use direct and indirect quotations to support ideas in a structured and coherent academic format
  6. To compose an academic essay in response to a given question or problem, expressing ideas effectively in written form
